Dear Friends,
Why does Paul repeat the call to rejoice? Philippians 3:1 reminds us that joy in Christ is essential for guarding our hearts and strengthening our faith.
There’s a military phrase pilots are trained to use in crisis: “Effect your rescue.” It means this: don’t panic, don’t freeze. Do what you have been trained to do so rescuers can find you. Recently, two American pilots ejected into hostile territory in Iran. In the moment of danger, they didn’t invent a plan; they relied on what had been drilled into them long before the crisis ever came. Their survival depended on practiced disciplines. Paul is saying something strikingly similar to us. In light of grace already given, effect your rescue. Every day — rejoice in the Lord. Return again to Christ. Refuse confidence in the flesh. These are not ways to earn God’s favor; they are the Spirit-trained responses that keep your heart anchored when fear, suffering, or deception presses in. What you practice in seasons of calm will steady you in seasons of crisis.
Paul knows the Philippians well. He is passionate about giving them everything he knows to open their hearts to the fullness of grace, whether times are good or bad. In other Scripture, he references disciplining ourselves like a soldier. Though he doesn’t use the military phrase “effect your rescue” in this letter, he definitely wants them — and us — to do just that. Paul says “finally,” and then, like my preacher husband when he’s “wrapping it up,” he keeps talking. He can’t help himself. There is too much at stake.
The book of Philippians has been pressing one theme into our hearts: joy in Christ. Not joy in circumstances or joy in “things going my way.” But joy in the Lord, a steady joy when life is unsteady.
And then Paul says something that sounds almost ordinary:
"To write the same things to you is no trouble to me and is safe for you." Philippians 3:1a
Women, sink into these words: it is safe for you. Rejoicing is safe for you. How does rejoicing create a safe place for us?
Rejoice in Difficult Seasons
Imagine the response of Paul’s audience to the command, “Rejoice always.” They knew the prison context of his writing, and he knew what their daily lives included. Say what, Paul? Rejoice always? Do you remember what I said in the first week of this series? Paul is a credible witness to walking by faith when life is hard. He writes from prison, and he has reminded them of his own suffering. Yet he doesn’t commiserate with their hard places. He almost uses his suffering as a badge that gives him the “right” to urge them to rejoice always. It’s as though he is saying, “I know this is hard. But it is the only way to walk by faith, especially when life turns upside down. And it will.”
We live in a world with a thousand voices, and many of them sound spiritual. They use Bible words, Christian language, and religious talk. But not everything that sounds Christian is Christ. This is nothing new, though the internet makes it more accessible and dangerous.
Paul warns the Philippians and us: Be careful. “Watch out for those dogs… those men who do evil… those mutilators of the flesh” (v. 2). Strong words. Yet these are not unkind words; they are protective. He’s addressing teachers who were turning Christianity into a checklist: Yes, believe in Jesus… but also add this, this, and this. Keep these rules. Achieve this status. Earn your standing.
It is easy for us to read this and think, I know those messages are wrong. But if you’ve ever felt righteous because you checked all the boxes, or crushed because you didn’t, then yes, it is your problem. It is mine too.
I can remember seasons when my spiritual life felt like a clipboard. Devotions? Check. Bible study? Check. Service? Check. I was tempted to believe the lie: If I do these things, God owes me a good day. Or another lie: If I do these things, I am better than she is. But the moment something knocked my clipboard out of my hands — sickness, conflict, a child’s struggle, a disappointment I couldn’t control — I realized how much confidence I had placed in the flesh. Not in obvious sin, but in “good Christian performance.”
Paul corrects us with one sentence: “We… glory in Christ Jesus, and… put no confidence in the flesh” (Philippians 3:3). This doesn’t mean we stop obeying. It means obedience becomes the fruit, not the root. Worship becomes Spirit-shaped, not self-powered.
Choosing joy — in the Lord — is a safeguard. Choosing joy in the Lord is one of God’s ways of keeping you safe. When your joy is anchored in Christ, you are less vulnerable to the seduction of human approval, less vulnerable to spiritual comparison, and less likely to follow a voice that flatters your ability and minimizes your need for Jesus.
Paul is also telling us something about the next generation: don’t assume they’ll pick it up. Sound doctrine must be taught, repeatedly, lovingly, plainly. “It is no trouble for me to write the same things again” (Philippians 3:1). Mothers and grandmothers, this is your permission slip to keep saying the gospel again and again, not because your children are slow, but because our hearts are leaky. We forget, we drift, and God uses repetition as a mercy.
So how do we safeguard our souls?
We come back, again and again, to the simplest center: Christ Jesus, crucified and risen. We remind ourselves: I am not held by my performance. I am held by my Savior. I worship “by the Spirit of God.” I glory in Christ. I refuse to put confidence in my flesh.
When we succeed, and we will, our success does not make us safe. Only Christ does.
And when we fail, and let’s face it, friends, we will, our failure does not disqualify us from grace. It drives us back to it. I recently searched through my journals for notes on a specific Philippians passage and read, “Lord, I’m hurting and don’t know how to respond. Give me grace. Actually, the grace is already here, show me how to reflect it.” Whether the day is going well or not so well, the grace is already in us when we belong to Jesus.
Rejoice in the Lord, dear sister. Not because life is easy. But because Christ is faithful. Joy is not fluff; it is armor. Effect your rescue.

"No confidence in the flesh," Philippians 3:3
- Consider what “effect your rescue” means for you personally. Choose today to rejoice in the love of Jesus while you are navigating one challenging place in your life.
- Teach the gospel to someone younger, again. Repetition is a safeguard.

PRAYER
Father, thank You for warning us because You love us. Forgive me for the ways I place confidence in myself, my performance, my knowledge, and my reputation. Teach me to worship by Your Spirit, to glory in Christ Jesus, and to rejoice in the Lord as my safeguard. Keep me anchored in sound doctrine and tender toward Your people. In Jesus’ name, amen.
