TODAY'S TREASURE

If you turn back your foot from the Sabbath, from doing your pleasure on my holy day, and call the Sabbath a delight and the holy day of the LORD honorable; if you honor it, not going your own ways, or seeking your own pleasure, or talking idly; then you shall take delight in the LORD, and I will make you ride on the heights of the earth, I will feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father, for the mouth of the LORD has spoken.

Isaiah 58:13-14

Today’s Treasure

If you turn back your foot from the Sabbath, from doing your pleasure on my holy day, and call the Sabbath a delight and the holy day of the LORD honorable; if you honor it,  not going your own ways, or seeking your own pleasure, or talking idly; then you shall take delight in the LORD, and I will make you ride on the heights of the earth, I will feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father, for the mouth of the LORD has spoken.

Isaiah 58:13-14

As we wrap up this week’s devotions on Abel, let’s take a few minutes to dig a little deeper to drive home Abel’s message from the grave into our hearts. You may want to grab a pen and paper to make notes that you can consider more fully later. Genesis 4:1–16 describes Abel’s broken world – living with a brother who hated him among other painful circumstances. What was Abel’s response to his broken world? He walked in obedience (he was righteous in God’s eyes) and he worshiped with a heart of trust toward God. How are you responding to brokenness in your world?

We have talked about how private worship affects corporate worship. Describe your private worship. Read Isaiah 58 and consider how your everyday activities reflect a worshipful lifestyle.

Today’s Treasure. Isaiah 58:13–14.

Read those verses. As I read these verses, consider these questions:

What do these verses concerning the Sabbath tell us about your priorities and behavior in corporate worship?

What practical preparations can you make to help yourself and/or your family appreciate and benefit from corporate worship?

“If you turn back your foot from the Sabbath, from doing your pleasure on my holy day, and call the Sabbath a delight and the holy day of the LORD honorable; if you honor it,  not going your own ways, or seeking your own pleasure, or talking idly; then you shall take delight in the LORD, and I will make you ride on the heights of the earth, I will feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father, for the mouth of the LORD has spoken.” Isaiah 58:13-14

Take some time to read Isaiah 58 again. Stop and pray after you read each verse and ask the Lord to reveal any ways your public worship is being negated by behavior in your private life. Confess your sin to the Lord. Consider asking a trusted friend to hold you accountable as you seek God’s change in your life. What is one action you will change to reflect your commitment to worship God in your daily life?

LIFE-GIVING ENCOURAGEMENT

Hebrews 10:19–25 is such a favorite passage of mine, I wrote a book about it: Treasures of Encouragement. Not only does it teach us about the power of encouragement, but more importantly, this passage invites us to experience intimacy with Jesus through repentance. When you are tempted to give up on life and your relationship with the Lord, make this a go-to scripture where you will discover not only an invitation to run to Jesus but practical steps for personal and private worship in our everyday lives:

“Therefore, brethren, since we have confidence to enter the holy place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way which He inaugurated for us through the veil, that is, His flesh, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful; and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near.” Hebrews 10:19-25 (NASB 1995)

PRAYER

Father, thank you for giving us a way to reflect our love for You in practical ways that are actual worship, no matter where we are or what we are doing. May we repent of our neglect of worship, both private and corporate, and recognize the many blessings we are missing out on because of disobedience.
