He Calls Me His Beloved

Today’s Treasure

A voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved son, with whom I am well pleased.”

Matthew 3:17 ESV

I hold a tattered index card in my hand and read the words scribbled across it. “You are my beloved daughter, Rosann. With you, I am well pleased.”

At the prompting of a counselor years ago, I wrote these words to encourage my heart to rest in its truth— the truth that my Heavenly Father loves and is pleased with me. But I’ve often recoiled at the thought that I— so unworthy and undeserving—could be loved by the incomprehensible God who created heaven and earth. So, I ask myself a question: How is this true?

Since this handwritten note is a personalization of Matthew 3:17, where God says He is pleased with His Son, Jesus, I promptly search the Scripture for context and a better understanding to see if I can apply it to myself. After all, the Father’s words here are spoken over Jesus—the perfect and sinless Son of God.

A detail I find fascinating is that God made this statement before Jesus performed any miracles, died on the cross, or fulfilled the plan of salvation for mankind. Yet, the Father says, “I love you. I am pleased with you— and it is good you exist.” And He says the same of you and me.

I struggle with attaching God’s love to what I’ve achieved, how I’ve performed in any given situation, and whether I’m living the “good Christian life.” Each time I fall short, I imagine God’s love-o-meter plummeting like the quick release on a pressure cooker. But this is how the enemy works to muddy our view of God’s true love for us.

LIFE-GIVING ENCOURAGEMENT

The good news is that when we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior, we gain the right to be called daughters of the Most High—daughters He loves (1 John 3:1a). God loves us as He has loved Jesus. It is not dependent on our performance—or lack—and it is not defined by our circumstances.

Our Father loves us unconditionally. Nothing you or I do can make Him love us less—and nothing we do can make Him love us more. You, dear daughter, are the Father’s beloved! With you, He is well pleased. Hallelujah!

PRAYER

Dear Father, it’s difficult to believe You love me when I feel so unworthy. Help me know that I am Your beloved daughter and am pleasing in Your sight. Thank you for accepting me, through Jesus, into Your family and giving me a love I never have to earn. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
