Today’s Treasure
The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.
Zephaniah 3:17 ESV
I was slightly peeved the day I walked into the chapel at the retreat center. I came to this place on the mountain for a quiet time and to write.
My visit had started off serenely enough but was interrupted by a large school group meeting. My plans were set awry by noise and the late-night banging of doors. And I like it best when my plans work out. When they don’t, I fight the battle of frustration.
I entered the dimly lit chapel in search of solitude to find a straggling teenager whose unwelcome presence, once again, thwarted my plan. A deep sigh escaped my lungs. Ignoring him, I strolled to the wall-sized glass windows to take in the woodsy scenery.
Lifting my eyes upward, I saw the partly sunny skies dotted with pocket-sized clouds, and I silently prayed for God to settle my weary mind. That’s when instrumental music softly drifted from the keyboard and filled the chapel with joyful praise. My mind was instantly quieted.
Then I realized the music radiated from the fingers of the teenager whom I had just wished would leave me alone—the one who was inviting me into a holy encounter with the Lord.
I took a seat in the back of the chapel and closed my eyes. The whispers of a familiar verse from the book of Zephaniah echoed in my mind: “The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing” (Zeph. 3:17).
A tear slipped down my cheek as I imagined God singing a beautiful melody over me. I prayed: Father, thank You for being in my midst—right here where things haven’t gone as planned. You are singing over me with gladness, and Your love quiets my weary heart.
That day, God’s serenade drowned out my spinning thoughts of frustration. He reminded me that He is in control of my circumstances and loves me through every unwelcomed situation. And He gave me the grace to thank this teenager for giving me—what sounded like— heavenly music.
For the remainder of my stay at the retreat center, I shared the facility with the school group. So, the noisy interruptions continued. But when the battle with frustration threatened to overcome me, I remembered the sweet melody of God’s love singing over me. And the Lord’s presence sustained me to the end.
LIFE-GIVING ENCOURAGEMENT
Friend, when your mind is tired of fighting against life’s interruptions, remember your Father is in control of every situation. Those unmet plans may be the very place where God is orchestrating a meeting with Himself. Let Him quiet you with His love as He sings a beautiful melody over you.
PRAYER
Dear Father, when my thoughts are spinning, quiet my mind with Your love. Let Your sweet song over me be louder than the roar of the circumstances surrounding me. Help me find solace and joy in Your presence. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
