TODAY'S TREASURE
If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!

Today’s Treasure
If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!
Matthew 7:11 ESV
A woman’s voice crackled over the school intercom. “Please send Rosann Strickland to the office for early release.” The words were music to my ears. I slammed the book closed, grabbed my book bag, and skipped out of my second-grade classroom.
I knew Daddy had gotten the note I left written across the white board on our kitchen wall. In large capital letters, I had carefully written: “I LOVE YOU, DADDY!” I had left the message right before I banged the front door shut and sauntered down our dirt road to hop on the school bus that morning.
School was the last place on earth I wanted to be as an eight-year-old. I had threatened to drop out several times since I graduated from kindergarten, but to no avail. And on the days I knew that Daddy would be working from home, each second spent at school was far more brutal. I wanted to be with him.
Strategically, I left colored hearts and I love you notes peppered around Daddy’s chair, in his office, and on our white board to gain his attention. Each one was a plea for him to break me out of school prison to spend time with him.
Daddy didn’t always sign me out of school early, but that day my heart sang as I rushed into his arms in that little elementary school hallway.
Being with my father was what I wanted more than anything in the world. And it is this longing—to be close with our Father—that Jesus points to when He teaches people to pray. In Matthew 6, Christ offers a prayer for us to model and begins with the phrase, “Our Father” (Matt. 6:9). The Hebrew and Aramaic translation for “father” is “abba.” This term for our Heavenly Father reveals warmth, intimacy, and loving care provided to His children.
LIFE-GIVING ENCOURAGEMENT
Keeping this image in our minds, hear the words of Jesus in Matthew 7:11: “If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!”
My earthly father gave me a good gift by answering my love notes with special time with him. Our Heavenly Father desires to do the same—and so much more. He wants to lavish us with His presence, His provision, His protection, and His will.
PRAYER
Dear Father, thank you for loving me and welcoming me into Your arms. Sometimes, the difficulties in this life cause me to forget that You desire to give good gifts to me. Help me trust Your love for me even when my feelings betray me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
